- Maize is subjected to as many as 112 diseases on a global basis.
In India we have records of about 35 of them. These are divisible as
1. Seed rots and seedling blights
2. Foliar diseases
3. Downy mildews
4. Stalk rots and wilts
5. Rust
6. Smuts
7. Cob and ear rots.
- Blight and stalk rots are the important diseases of maize crop. Blight
can be controlled by growing of tolerant / resistant varieties like
DHM 103 and Ashwini.
- Stalk rot can be minimized by more frequent irrigations and in case
of rainfed crop, soil mulch should be provided preventing loss of moisture
through evaporation.
